Tips for Landing an Internship

January 29, 2019

You may be stressed out about finding an internship, but don’t worry – there are tons of people who have been there before!

Growing up, I’m sure everyone stressed to you how important it would be to get an internship. “I know, I know.” is what you probably replied, but it’s true! I had 3 internships during college – one of which actually hired me years later!

Finding an internship isn’t always easy, but it’s a must-have to land your dream job someday. It’s all about having the right experience.

Now, where do we begin? Let’s start with the basics.

Get involved

  • Join clubs and activities at your school. It’ll help to find a club that’s relevant to your future career – maybe something like the Fashion Club, Nurses Club or Journalism Club. There’s even an option to start your own club.
  • Freelance writing for your college newspaper/website is always a great route to go. It’ll help get your name out there to the local community.
  • Get a job on campus – whether that means at your gym’s front desk or giving the tour’s at your school. You never know who you’re going to meet!

Customize yourself

  • When applying for an internship, make sure your resume and cover letter is customized for the specific opportunity. It’s important to show that you’ve taken the time and you really care about the position you’re applying for.
  • Do your research and include specific details from the job description listed for the internship. You’ll want to incorporate those details into your resume and application.

Brand yourself

  • A super important step that many people forget is to rename your resume files. When you save your resume, include your full name in the file title before sending it over. This will help the hiring manager when it comes to sorting out resumes.
  • Make sure your social media profiles are on private and anything inappropriate (like wearing revealing clothes or drinking at frat parties) is removed. You’ll also want to make sure no red cups are being displayed. The person looking you up will already have a snapshot of who you are from your social media profiles, so you want to put your best foot forward.
